1 NOTE
There are many things that we do every day. Consider all of the biological daily activities (inhaling and exhaling 20,000 times a day, sleeping 7-9 hours, eating and drinking for nutrition and hydration, using the restroom). We keep our bodies (brushing our teeth, showering, dressing, applying skin care…shout to Korean skin-care). And don’t sleep on maintenance needs (making our beds, doing the dishes, cleaning our cribs). And we can never forget walking the dog (big shout out to our beagle, Cookie Teter).
As you look back on your daily activities, is reading part of your routine?
Stephen Sample created a reading continuum. The far left was the most ephemeral (newspapers) and the far right was the most enduring (supertexts and Scripture). This spectrum captured the increasing importance of reading content, moving from left to right. The question each of us must answer is how much total time do we read and where on the spectrum do we spend the most time. My fear is that most of us spend way too much time on the left of the continuum. Dr. Sample wrote The Contrarian Leader before social media. He would not be pleased.
I encourage us to spend 20 minutes a day reading the supertexts (apart from Scripture). Over the course of a year this will translate into roughly 120 reading hours. 20 minutes a day gives us ample margin to read at a leisurely pace, with pen in hand. Imagine the wisdom from reading books that are 50+ years old and still in print! Who is down to set a 20 minute daily reading timer with me?
We are what we read!
1 QUESTION
Do you have a daily reading routine? Does your reading engage your mind and nourish your soul?
