“If you place people in an atmosphere where they feel close to God, and then challenge them with his Word, then they will make decisions.”
- Henrietta Mears
1 NOTE
Henrietta Mears (1890-1963) is one of my favorite Christian leaders. Over a 48 year public ministry career, Miss Mears was a Bible teacher and preached at conferences all over the world. She was an author and promoter of Sunday School materials. She founded Christian education departments, a publishing company and the retreat center named Forest Home. Some of the leaders she trained include Dawson Trotman, Billy Graham and Bill Bright (Campus Crusade started in Miss Mears’ living room). Today, I am most grateful for Forest Home.
Henrietta called the future Forest Home property ‘the most elegant place she had ever seen.’ Her first offer was rejected. This was surprising. The owner was ill, quite old and about to have major surgery and his son wanted to avoid any inheritance tax. Then the glory of God thundered. He sent a wall of water. The resort buildings were destroyed. But the camp site was preserved. The family offered to sell Forest Home for $30,000. Note the perfect timing of God!
This past week was the Holy Faith Fellowship Family Camp. We worshipped God, enjoyed fellowship, Pastor Chris Rattay preached the Word, Superintendent Mike Chong-Perkinson delivered power ministry and we sat under a million stars in ‘the most elegant place on earth.’
As we closed our retreat at Victory Circle, I thanked God for Henrietta Mears’ faith, fruit, vision and negotiating skills. 88 years later God is still challenging and renewing His people at Forest Home.
